Hope Branch, enrichment coordinator at the Humane Society of Independence County, has these tips about caring for dogs during the summer:
Just like people, dogs are at risk for over-heating in the summer. Some dogs are more at risk than others; if your dog is dark-colored, has thick/long hair, is a brachycephalic (has a flat face, like a Pug or Bulldog), is very young or very old, or is sick, take extra precautions.
All dogs should have constant access to clean water, but you can help them beat the heat by providing a small pool as well. For enrichment, try freezing a variety of ice cubes. Water or low-sodium broth can be frozen plain, or you can toss in dog-safe fruits and veggies for added fun and nutrients.
To donate to the enrichment program, call Megan Trail at 870-262-7130.
CHEROKEE VILLAGE — The Spring River Gem and Mineral Club met at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 at Thunderbird Center in Cherokee Village.
Bob Hemmann, senior geologist in exploration at the DoeRun Company in Missouri, focused his program on the metal and mining industry, with “The Geology, Mining and Milling of the Virburnum Trend.” The Virburnum Trend ore deposits in southeastern Missouri contain the largest reserves of lead and zinc known in the U.S. today. These Mississippi Valley type ore occurrences also have minor but significant amounts of copper, silver and cadmium.
Hemmann discussed the geology of the New Virburnum Trend from depositional environments (the mines in the trend roughly follow an ancient coral reef complex), to mineralization (how it was changed into an ore), and brecciation (the breaking down of rock into fragments.) He also discussed the history of the development and mining of the Trend and the milling process used to recover the metals.
Hemmann, from Salem, Missouri, began his career in the mining industry as a mine geologist with the DoeRun Company in 2006. In 2015 he was promoted to geology supervisor of the south trend and in 2020 was promoted to supervisor of mine geology. This year, he assumed the role of senior geologist in exploration.
The purpose of the Spring River Gem and Mineral Club is to provide interest and education in mineralogy, lapidary, geology, paleontology and archaeology. Perks of membership are field trips and a monthly silent auction for mineral/fossil specimens. Speakers are experts in their field.
The SRGMC Oct. 6 meeting will feature Freda Cruse, a native American author and historian.
Guests are welcome to attend the meeting and enjoy a Dutch-treat lunch at an area restaurant after the meeting. For further information call 901-647-1521 or 901-212- 0365.
